More “Skullz”

Here’s a preview of a personal piece that I am currently working on called “The Bone Yard“. The scene will be of an NBA players skeleton rulin’ the court in hell.

Also, after viewing the “BetterThanHuman” blog I came across a vector piece that inspired me. It looked like a fun illustration so I put my own personal spin on it and this is what came about. It took 1 1/2 hrs to complete. Thanks Tomiss for the inspiration! – S

Holy shnikies! Shane I’m left in awe of your talent. Thank you.
Love the skulls!
Hmmm… I dont know about talent, but your foundational skills definitely need some help:)
Your golf skull still looks pretty wonky. There are a couple of proportion issues (even after your “rework”) and you’re still slapping color around like a gay pride fest gone terribly wrong. Consider how each color should roll around the form of the skull especially around your darkest and lightest values. You have the right idea with the rim light, you just need to execute it better…. Check this paint over to see what I was talking to you about earlier today:

I’ll let you know what I think of the other skeleton as soon as I fix the rest of your mistakes… its gonna be a loooong night….
… oh, and god help you if you delete this comment. Get to work fucker. Hugs! – J
Thanks for the ‘friendly’ crit Bro! I was wondering how the mechaHATEchump screen name came about. Now I know. I like what ya did with the rim light by adding that extra hint of blue you really made it pop. Now, seeing as how I don’t have a 3D program to get the lighting or the proportions exact, how’s about you come on over and let me rip your skull out to see how far off I really am. Thanks again for the input. Your the best!!!
By the way, your Mom and I were wondering how the book is coming?
Shane, while Mecha’s stuff is no less than amazing in my eyes as well, I like your version of the golf skull better. I love the harsh colored lighting. It reminds me of those old pulp magazine covers or some of the old Twilight Zone comics I have.

LOL
I didn’t use a 3D program for the paint over although I probably could have done a better job if I did… and you DEFINITELY could have as well.
If you don’t have a 3D program for reference just google some skulls like I did and work it out… or you can simply trace over one like you normally do for most of your work anyway.. doh!
All joking aside, you know I love ya but you have to stop getting butt hurt every time I give you a crit. Also, don’t think I’m somehow exempt from critiques either, I can take as much as I can give but that person better know what the fuck they’re talking about or I’m going call their monkey ass out. If you don’t want my opinion, don’t send me your work and ask me what I think. I’m going tell you what’s wrong with your image and show you what to do to make it better, not blow smoke up your ass.
Unlike 99.9% of the people who don’t really give a shit about your progress, I have a vested interest in it because I AM a friend and I know what the fuck I’m talking about, not some internet buddy who uses words to stroke your ego. Fuck that. That’s not going help you get any better. If anything, respect me for that. Like Tony Soprano said “You may not like me, but you WILL respect me”.
Stop getting defensive and start putting more effort into your work. You’ll be a better man and artist for it. – J
J, I’m not actually getting defensive about anything just giving you back some of the ribbing that you gave to me. Sorry to question your crits/ego. Next time I’ll just say “Yes sir. Thank you” and possibly make the changes. I do value your opinion, if I agree or not. That’s why I show you.
Now pull your panties up and quit crying, ya bastard! Peace & Love – S
Thanks BetterThanHuman! I like that style as well. However, I did take some of Mecha’s advice and accentuated some of the rim light and bumped up the contrast a bit. Even though he sometimes has harsh crits he has a very good eye for color and layout. I also know that he has the best of intentions and wants to bring out the best in every artist. He just has his own way of doing so. The final version is the one that is showing.
WORD… looks much better.
Cool. I wasn’t saying Mecha was wrong, just putting in my two cents. That’s the thing about artwork, it’s sooo subjuective. Everyone has a different opinion.
Again, both of you are amazingly talented and skilled. Far beyond anything I could ever hope to be.
Great job tag-teaming the illustration. It’s been cool for me to see you-two work together to create a real piece of art from my cheesy doodle.
Thanks!
Top skull owns dude…awesome stuff!
WOW! Ilove it. Really nice work
I like it, very much !
[...] A while back I posted this random doodle of a skull with a golf green on top. Shane, one of the guys who visits the blog, was miraculously able to derive some inspiration from it. He did his own version and posted it on his blog. That post came with some critique from another illustrator Joel Carlo. Both of these guys are phenomenal artists who’s work I admire a lot. Anyhow, Click the photo to see the results of their explorations. Check out Shane’s original post here: More “Skullz” [...]
